Mutiny Wallet Shutdown Timeline

Mutiny Wallet will disappear from app stores and the web by Dec 31, 2024. If you have funds in a wallet, keep reading.

A ship sailing into a sunset with the text "Mutiny Wallet" in the clouds.

Last month we announced that we are shutting down Mutiny Wallet. It was a tough decision that was made after much deliberation and evaluation. To understand the why behind it all, refer to the announcement post.

Moving forward this is your spot for information. We will update this page as we move through the milestones, including the FAQ at the bottom. I'm also available on X and Nostr if you want to reach out.

What do I need to do right now?

You need to move funds out of the wallet and close any open lightning channels.

The destination of these funds depends on your own preferences. Mutiny can send funds to any bitcoin, lightning, or fedimint wallet (yay open protocols). You're welcome to self host Mutiny and send funds to your own setup. We have self-hosting guides, many of which are very technical. For a simple "one button click" install, check out the Mutiny Wallet on Start9. You can go with their hardware or run the software for free on an old machine collecting dust.

Any ecash balance you have in the app should be transferred out as well. The easiest place to go is the Fedi app. If you join the same federation in the Fedi app that your Mutiny Wallet app belongs to, transfers should have low fees. The self-hosted version of Mutiny is still able to be a fedimint wallet if that's your desire.

What's next

The Mutiny Team isn't going anywhere (except for the cat that disembarked at our last port of call). We care very much about the need for strong data privacy and are working on novel security tools for developers across the ecosystem. Privacy UX needs an upgrade – for users and builders. If you're an app dev, reach out and we can chat.

FAQ

Will I lose my funds?
For funds in the on-chain wallet, your funds are protected by your 12 word seed. You can import that seed into a self-hosted Mutiny app or an app like Sparrow. We recommend closing any lightning channels, especially those with the Voltage LSP that is winding down, and moving the funds to a different wallet. The Zeus LSP is available when self hosting. For funds in a fedimint, you'll need to transfer them to a different wallet. Join the same federation in the Fedi app to reduce fees.

I closed a lightning channel but the funds aren't in my on-chain wallet. Where are they?
Closing a lightning channel can sometimes cause funds to be locked up for 3-14 days if a fee is not agreed upon between app and LSP, resulting in a force-closure. They will eventually arrive in your on-chain wallet once the closing transaction confirms and the sweep transaction follows it. Close your channels early to avoid issues. Maybe do it while fees are low.

How do I self host and transfer my funds?
There are many ways to run your own sovereign instance of Mutiny. The simple method is to run the Mutiny app on Start9. This is ideal for those who can't or don't want to deal with technical details. If you're okay getting technical and want more control over availability and connectivity of your setup, we have instructions for many hosting platforms. It's all in the self-hosting guides.

Why is my balance wrong in Sparrow?
It's possible you don't have the correct derivation path. Mutiny uses taproot addresses for its on-chain wallet. This means funds are stored using the derivation path m/86'/0'/0'. For more information, refer to our Recovery guide.

Is the Mutiny Wallet gone?
It lives on as open source code. You can find it on github. The repo isn't guaranteed to always be around, so forking it is recommended if you need it long term.

I'm having an issue, where can I get help?
With us shutting down, help will be very limited from us going forward. You can submit an issue on our github (https://github.com/MutinyWallet/mutiny-web/issues) with the logs located in the emergency toolkit page in the settings. We'll try to look through them and provide suggestions for what you can do to fix whatever issue you're having.
